Recounting and decolonizing the stories of the Belgian-Moroccan community

Nos héritages is launching a unique guided tour in Brussels to tell the story of one of the capital’s most important communities!

@Salma El Ghabri

“Recounting and Decolonizing the stories of the Belgian-Moroccan community” is a historical and personal journey that places the individuals involved at the heart of the story. It is the story of the thousands of Moroccans who crossed the Mediterranean to rebuild post-war Belgium and provide a better future for their children. But also the story of those children, who grew up in a cultural in-between space that fostered their multiple identities.

Conceived and led by Sarra El Massaoudi, the guided tour is punctuated by the voices of Belgian-Moroccans across all generations. These testimonies, recorded as part of the Nos héritages project, recount 60 years of exile, working-class life, racism, and holidays in the homeland, as well as stories of hope, resistance, and belonging.

What to expect?

This 2h30 tour through the streets of Molenbeek offers a fresh, more accurate, and more informed perspective on our shared Belgian and Moroccan history.

The tour begins at the Petit Château and generally concludes at the Migration Museum on the other side of the canal (creating a near-loop).
